Autumn Term 2020

We have some very tired children (and adults too) due to all the fantastic work we have done this term.  We have tried extra hard to include lots of high-quality work and to such a high standard of presentation too. We are continuing to work on our resilience and trying to solve their own problems, independently. This is continuing to improve.

We have had a really great term and started the year fantastically We have learnt about the Stone Age to Bronze Age life.  We have also learnt “The Firework Maker’s Daughter” and “Father Christmas: a biography” including a very exciting visit from Father Christmas.  Mr Rowles was in a meeting and missed it unfortunately!

In Maths, we have been looking at addition and subtraction.

This term’s topic was “Festivals of Light”.  We found out all about how light affects the world around us and how important it is to many cultures.  We have been finding out about light across the curriculum in Science, RE (Diwali, Hanukkah) and Art.

In Science, we learned all about light and shadow.  We looked at opaque, translucent and transparent and how they affect the way we see. This included reflection and refraction and we played games and did experiments linked to light.

In PSHE we have looked at mindfulness, how to de-stress and why we all need friends and relationships.

We have started looking at invasion games (e.g tag rugby and football) and have got quite muddy too.

This term’s KIRFS are useful to show our learning and we are better at remembering them. To help develop children’s fluency in mathematics, we are continuing to ask them to learn Key Instant Recall Facts each half term. We expect children to practise their KIRFs at least 3 times a week.  We have focused on number bonds and adding 2 small numbers together and subtracting too to avoid silly mistakes and speed up more complex calculations.

We would like your child to continue to practise their spellings over Christmas.  This could be through quizzing them or using EdShed.  If they use TTRockstars, they can continue to do so.

Next term, we are starting with “Volcanoes” and moving on to “Ancient Egypt”. KIRFS will be sent out to keep you informed.  Have a lovely break and a very Merry Christmas.
