School Governors - Local Advisory Board (LAB)
As a 22-year Civil Servant with a wealth of public sector knowledge I have been able to contribute significantly to UK prosperity and Defence direction. I have volunteered in many supporting roles during that time, including the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Scouts, the RSPCA and latterly Devon and Cornwall Police Force.
As a resident of St Columb, a member of the community and with two children in the school, I am pleased to have been able to volunteer to support St Columb Major Academy. I have been a Community Governor with St Columb Major for four years now, two as Chair of Governors, and have taken pride in seeing and assisting the school through some challenging transitions and more recently an OFSTED inspection. Coming through these challenges with ever increasing positive feedback gives us the opportunity to carefully implement further change and improvement to benefit all.
It is my intent to retain the position of Chair of Governors and strive to deliver the best for my children, your children, the school staff and the parents, guardians and community around the school.
Together we can be Happy, Hard-working, Successful.
I have been on the LAB since September 2014 and have seen many changes along the way including joining a Multi Academy Trust. I have also experienced the latest Ofsted visit.
I have one child that has been to SCMA who is now in secondary school, one child who is currently in the school and one due to start school in September 2021.
I have been the SEND Governor since 2014 and more recently taken up the role of Pupil Premium Governor since 2017 and the Safeguarding Governor in early 2019.
I have attended many training courses around SEND, Pupil Premium and Safeguarding to ensure I can challenge the school to the best of my knowledge. I have a genuine interest in the school, and I hope to ensure it provides a good, well-balanced, fun, and varied education for all of our children.
My name is Rev Helen Baber, I am also the Rector for St Columb Church. My real areas of interest are the well-being of the staff, and the students and the school’s values.
I hope as a school governor to build relationships with the school through the church and community.
In addition to being a Community Governor at St Columb Major Academy, I am also Chief Operating Officer of Kernow Learning. Before joining Kernow Learning I have worked in primary, secondary and special schools and academy trusts having started working as a Teaching Assistant before moving to roles in the areas of Special Educational Needs and then school business management.
As a child, I spent many weekends in St Columb Major with my dad who was a bank manager in the town.
I am excited to work with the school to explore the various ways in which the LAB and Trust can work together in supporting the school’s successes
I am Amelia, a mum of two girls who are the fifth generation of my family to attend the school in St Columb Major.
I have worked in education before taking some time out to bring up my family. I have been a school governor for around two years now and am passionate about doing my part to ensure that the school is hard working, successful and that the school is a happy place to be for both the staff and the children.
I am a Year 5 teacher with experience of working for the RNLI and as a professional session musician.
I am passionate about providing a high level of education to all pupils and giving them rich opportunities to experience the world and increase their cultural capital.
As governor, I wish to be a representative of the staff and their well-being as well as have a voice in developing the school curriculum.
Community Governors are people with particular expertise and skills (for example in finance, running a business, higher education) who are co-opted onto the Local Area Board with the approval of Kernow Learning. They have a four year term of office.

The Headteacher is also a Governor and remains a Governor unless he/she resigns or retires from the post.
The Executive Principal for Kernow Learning is also a Governor and remains a Governor unless he/she resigns or retires from the post.
