Residential Year 5 - Source to Sea April 2018

Y5 Camp: Source to Sea

Thursday 19thand Friday 20thMay 2018

On Friday, we met the instructors on Bodmin Moor, near to Jamaica Inn. Our aim - to find the source of the River Fowey. With maps and compasses distributed between groups, we set off – firstly along a quiet lane, then a track, until we crossed a footbridge and a bog to reach the open moor. We sat at the top of a hill for lunch, before making our way down the other side where we saw some boggy pools where the River Fowey begins its journey. With collections of animal bones, very muddy shoes and extremely weary legs, we made our way our off the moor via a slightly shorter route.

On arrival back at school, we played on the field whilst tea was prepared. After hot dogs, burgers and cake, we played a selection of team games before hot chocolate and bed.

After breakfast, we left on the coach for Lostwithiel where we boarded canoes for the final leg of our River Fowey journey. The river here was narrow and gentle and we paddled easily, passing beautiful scenery and the occasional swan. With the river gradually getting wider, we made our way to Fowey, finding out about wildlife, geographical features, secret hideaways of kings and pop stars and Neanderthal fishing techniques. On arrival at Fowey, we waved goodbye to our instructors and boarded the bus back to school for a well-earned rest.

The children were a credit to themselves and the school. The instructors commented on their positive attitude, perseverance and ability throughout the two days. A big well done to all.
