Swimming Changes 2018
I am writing to inform you that there are going to be some changes to swimming at St Columb Major ACE Academy. It is a national curriculum expectation that the children are able to do the following by the end of Year 6:
- Children can swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25m
- Children can use a range of strokes effectively
- Children can perform a safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
The percentage of children who acheive this at the end of Year 6 is reported on and published on our school website.
The school has decided that half a term of swimming lessons will take place in Year 2, 3 and 4. Children who do not pass the Swimming assessment criteria will have top up swimming lessons in Year 5 and Year 6 if necessary. Year 2 and 3 have already had their swimming sessions so the main change is that Year 4 will be swimming in the Summer Term, Year 1 will not. Letters will follow from your class teacher.
If your child requires top up swimming session in Year 5 or 6, you will receive a letter informing you of this.
The County of Cornwall has the longest coast line in Great Britain and so it is essential that your child learns to swim proficiently. To boost the school’s swimming provision we recommend your child attends swimming lessons. The school uses Fitness 4u which is based in St Columb Major, the teachers provide fantastic lessons. Alternatively, Waterworld Leisure Centre in Newquay runs a swimming programme for children.
